This six-week course is based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.  at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Stress Reduction Clinic.  Mindfulness is a way of being fully aware of the present as it unfolds, tuning into breath, and learning to experience life more fully, moment to moment.  People have found MBSR helpful in coping with a range of conditions, including personal stress, pain and chronic illness. In this workshop we will learn how to practice Hatha Yoga poses in a chair or using the chair for support. This allows people who have physical limitations and those who for other reasons can’t get down on the floor to maintain their yoga practice. This workshop may also be of interest to those with a regular Hatha practice who would like to learn how to adapt poses and use them as "office" stress busters. A number of poses will be practiced and participants are invited to ask about adaptations responding to their special needs.  New beginners welcome.

Why Meditate?– [by donation]
Wednesday, May 12, 5:30 to 7:00pm
Please pre-register.
A generally held view is that meditation improves health and well-being. Over the last 20 years scientists have been doing research relating to these perspectives and among many findings have shown that meditation can "change your brain." Some of the questions explored through science and practice are if meditation can make us happier, healthier or smarter. Although these are interesting and important questions, at the root of most meditation practices is the question: can I understand myself and accept myself as I am? We will explore what this means to us and see how we can begin to make time for meditation in our lives. The presentation will include guidance in meditation and discussion.
